Ben Affleck revealed what happened at the 2023 Grammys when it became a viral meme! The Oscar-winning actor opened up about all the speculation surrounding when he looked upset as he sat next to his wife, Jennifer Lopez, and whispered something to him. Yes, the whisper was a “husband and wife thing,” according to the star, but he also wasn’t bothered that social media was going crazy over the clip, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I had a great time at the GRAMMYs. My wife was going there, and I was like, ‘Well, there’s going to be some great music. That could be fun,'” he told the outlet. in an interview published Thursday, March 16.
As for knowing exactly what the gorgeous couple was whispering, it had to do with Ben finding out it wasn’t exactly “fun” at the event when the cameras got closer to them. “I saw [GRAMMY host Trevor Noah approach] and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ They were framing us in that shot, but I didn’t know they were rolling,” Ben explained. “I leaned over her and was like, ‘As soon as they start rolling, I’m going to pull away from you and let you sit next to Trevor.’ She said, ‘You better not go.’ He added, “It’s a husband and wife story. I mean, part of it is, I’m like, ‘Okay, who is this act?’ Like, I can’t hold it in. My wife yes, of course. And yes, it’s your wife’s business event.
Although the Justice League said he had attended “bored” and “drunk” events in the past, it wasn’t until this Grammy appearance that some fans speculated the star was consuming alcohol. Ben said he was surprised by these trolls, as he was proud of his recent sobriety.
“I’ve been to award shows and been drunk, a bunch. No one ever said I was drunk,” he said. “[But at the Grammys] they were like, ‘He’s drunk.’ And I thought, that’s interesting. That raises a whole other question as to whether or not it’s wise to acknowledge addiction because there’s a lot of compassion out there, but there’s still a huge stigma, which is often quite inhibiting.
Of course, soon after the memes went viral, Jennifer took to her Instagram to assure fans the night was irresistible. “Still the best time with my love hubby,” she captioned a short video of their night together at the Grammys.
Ultimately, according to Ben, he’s not too disappointed to be a viral meme. “At some point, I am who I am,” he said THR.
